When it is windy, waves are affected by the topography of the coast. Where the coastline is high and steep, it can help shield you from an offshore wind. Note, however, that if you capsize, you will drift away from the shore
With an onshore wind, the waves will be higher – but if you capsize, you’ll drift towards land.
Next to flat coastal areas, an offshore wind can quickly generate high waves and drive you away from land.
If the wind is onshore, a steep coastline will create reflected waves. The waves will be irre- gular and move in different directions, making it harder to paddle than normal waves would.
You also need to pay attention to the sea (or lake) bottom. Large rocks under the surface or shallows can damage your kayak’s rudder and hull.
