1. The name comes from the pattern of the stroke.
2. Turn your upper body towards the point you’re trying to reach. Put the paddle in the water away from the kayak and even with your feet, then pull it towards your hip.
3. When the paddle is next to your hip, rotate the blade so it cuts through the water as you move it away from the boat.
4. When it’s some distance away from and even with your hips, turn the blade again and push it toward your feet.
5. When the paddle is even with your feet, rotate the blade again so that it cuts through the water as you move it away from the kayak.
6. Continue this pattern until you reach the spot you were aiming for.
